Phobias

Phobias are a specific manifestation on anxiety and are very commonplace. People maybe phobic in relation to animals, places / contexts, sex, bodily concerns for example blood and situations for example flying or dentists. People may find that their quality of life is severely affected by their phobias with them having to take avoiding actions which mean they feel upset with themselves and sad about the things they find they cannot do, for example fly to a friend’s wedding.

When you have a phobia, you might feel stress or panic when faced with the situation itself or you may live in constant fear of encountering whatever triggers your fear. For some people, it can become exhausting trying to find ways to avoid the trigger and your relationships with other people may be impacted negatively as a result. You might also have trouble concentrating or sleeping, as worries take over your mind.

Some of the following physiological difficulties can arise when faced with a phobia:

  • Sweating
  • Cold flashes
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Numbness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Light-headedness

Individuals may experience panic attacks and prolonged suffering can be associated with other conditions including depression, substance misuse etc.

People who have a phobia do not have to live their life in fear. Counselling and psychotherapy can offer a non-judgmental space for exploring the experience of Phobias and examine, adopt, and develop new positive ways for managing and alleviating symptoms.
